The answer is that it allowed the United States to have a naval base in the Pacific. This was very important because many islands and countries were located near Guam in the Pacific area. With America having captured Guam, they were granted access to these islands near Guam and even some regions in Asia. It is also a good stop over for ships and military vehicles. Let's say a ship would want to travel to Hawaii, they can access Guam as a stopover and then travel to Hawaii because Guam is so near. Guam is also a good place go keep provisions when at war because Guam is the center of many regions.
