With regards to social classes, the sharp distinction Karl Marx draw between the proletariat (laborers) and the bourgeoisie (owners) in a society would be the control and the ownership of the means of production. The proletariat are the workers which includes the farmers and factory workers. They do not have any means of production. The bourgeoisie are the capitalists and are the ones who own the means of production.
