    The lieutenant governor in Texas is the second highest executive office in that state and the second most powerful post. The lieutenant controls the works of Texas Senate and budgeting process.

    Dan Patrick has been in that office since January 20, 2015.

    The lieutenant governor assumes the powers of the Governor of Texas when the governor is out of state or unable to attend to his duties. He becomes then the acting governor. He also becomes Governor if the current Governor resigns, dies or is removed from office.

    The position of lieutenant governor is Texas vests significant power compared to many other state governors, whose position and responsibilities are similar to those of the Vice President of the United States.
