The money that funds Social Security comes from payroll taxes. Every worker in the United States has 6.2 percent of their income deducted each pay period and their employers also contribute 6.2 percent. People who are self-employed also pay the Social Security tax. This money, along with interest earned on the deductions, is used to fund the program.
