Why did the soviets not allow people to leave occupied East Germany

    The Soviets weren't particularly keen on people leaving occupied East Germany because with less people it meant that the economy of this part of Germany would be less stable and less efficient. However, they knew at the same time that they were most likely giving people less opportunity to work.
