The Akkadian empire was the first large empire of Mesopotamia, and it centered in the city of Akkad and its surrounding area. It united the Akkadians and the Sumerians under one rule.

The empire saw its greatest moment during the rule of Sargon of Akkad, with trade being particularly significant.

Trade was a way to spread Akkadian culture and goods. It also provided them new goods in return. Their trade extended from Anatolia, with its silver mines to the lapis lazuli mines in modern Afghanistan. They got cedar from Lebanon and copper of Magan. The empire was also the centre of grain production in the region.

Evidence of its importance is the fact that Akkadian became the official language of the region somewhere around the 3rd and 2nd millenia BC.
