The similarities between settlements in South Asia and around the world are many, because everywhere, settlements used to be established near bodies of water like rivers and lakes. This was common, because the people responsible for the settlements, generally represented an agricultural population and water was essential for the success of the agricultural fields and the food of the population. In addition, water is essential for various human activities, animal husbandry and even for human consumption.
