    Turkmenistan is one of the the world's most repressive and closed countries. The president, who is elected for a lifetime, has a total control of all aspects of public life.

    No alternative political party is allowed and the access to information is heavily limited. Satellite dishes on houses are prohibited in order to stop foreign media influence. It is difficult to enter and leave the country and many dissidents remain in exile or they are imprisoned. International human rights groups are not allowed to enter the country.

    All citizens must carry internal passports, noting place of residence. The president is considered to be a cult figure, his face adorns many every-day objects, the books he wrote are mandatory readings in schools. His statues are everywhere. There is no freedom of religion either, as unregistered religious groups are banned. Homosexual conduct is punishable and homosexuality treated as a disease.
