The Jesuits, or Society of Jesus, are (they still exist) an order within the Roman Catholic Church that was founded by the Spaniard Ignatius of Loyola.

As the Catholic Church was losing members to Protestantism, the Jesuits became famous as missionaries. They went around the world and converted as they went bringing new members into the fold of the Catholic Church.

Today, they are famous for their institutions of Higher Education.
