    Shogun was a military leader who ruled most all of Japan. Second only to the Emperor but in practical terms had more power. The powerful local military commanders were in fealty to the Shogun and they were called Diamyo. The Samuri would then be the noble warriors in fealty to the Diamyo or to the Shogun.

    So, in terms of Feudal Europe we are talking all about the ruling class and so the Shogun would be the King, the Diamyo woud be the lord, and the Samurai would be the Knights.
