    Memory decay

    Explanation:

The neurosciences study how information is stored and retrieved, and they identify that the memory decays as a natural process of time passing by.

The information is generally less available for retrieval if a big-time lapse happened, so Merril will have a hard time to remember.

The trace decay theory assumes that a neurochemical trace is formed when strong memories are formed and they prevent memories from fading away.

Important is to notice that short term memory is generally more likely to decay while the information n the long term is resistant and more endurable.
