What information is tracked by the federal government through a social security number?

    I believe the answer is: The number of quarters (three-month periods) an employee has worked and the amount of money an employee has contributed to the Social Security Trust Fund.

    These information is important in order to create an estimate on the nation's Gross Domestic Product. Which provide the government with information on how much budget may be available to do government funded programs in the near future.
