    Athens was a direct democracy in which citizens voted on laws themselves. There are similarities and differences between Athenian democracy and that of the United States. In a democracy, the citizens make decisions. But the difference between the democracy of Athens and U. S. democracy today is that in Athens the people directly made the laws themselves.
