    The primary goal was to take control of the Holy Land. The Europeans believed that the Holy Land, where Jesus lived, should be in control of Christrians, and not Muslims, and they understood the Crusades as a "holy war" to bring the Holy Land under Christian control.

    In practice, however, often the crusaders wanted glory and riches too.
