In a capitalist economy, who ultimately determines the answer to the economic question "What to produce"?

    Consumers answer this, ultimately, by spending their money. This will drive producers to adjust what they are making to the shifting desires of consumers. If consumers want gadget X with feature X made by company Y It is likely that companies A, B, C will all make a version of gadget X with feature X as well.
