There are different classes of crimes according to their severity. The less delicate crimes are known as infractions, also known as violations. The most common examples of infractions are traffic offenses, like a speeding ticket. The violations or inflactions are normally paid in a fine.

The second level of crime are called misdemeanors. These ones can be punished with a fine or incarceration in a local county jail. Some common examples are Driving Under the Influence of a substance (DUI) or shoplifting.

The most serious level of crime is called felony. Murder, kidnapping and robbery are felonies. A felony is punished with at least one year in State prison.
