What percentage of Australia speak English?

    Pretty much everyone in Australia speaks at least a little English as it's the only language used in most contexts and it's pretty hard to get by without knowing at least a few words. Some new immigrants from non-English-speaking countries initially don't speak English but nearly all of them learn at least a bit. A very few older people who are mainly house-bound may not feel the need to speak any English and rely on younger relatives to translate. But this is probably less than two percent of the population. In a 2016 survey over 96% of the population said they spoke only English or spoke English well

    According to the 2011 statistics about 76.8% of people speak English only, 18.2% are non-English speakers.
