The first civilizations in Mesoamerica evolved in river valleys as did the civilizations in Mesopotamia. Egyptian and Mayan cultures both had pyramids and hieroglyphics.

    Explanation:

Most scholars believe the Olmecs were the founding culture of Mesoamerica and they began to appear in the southwestern Gulf of Mexico, near what is today known as the city of Veracruz. It was like Mesopotamia in the sense that the settlements emerged in river valleys, like Uruk in Mesopotamia. The Olmec culture ranged from about 1400 BCE to 100 BCE. The archaeological consensus is that the Mesoamerican pyramids of the Mayan culture, for example, only have a weak architectural resemblance to the Egyptian pyramids. Mayan and Egyptian cultures both used hieroglyphics as well. But any evidence of contact or ties between the Mayans and Egyptians is very weak. Egyptian culture was earlier and it is likely that their similarities evolved independently. They are alike in essence because human groups like to revere their dead or believe in deities so they construct pyramids. We have the capacity as humans for symbolic language so we develop writing systems but that does not necessitate contact or diffusion.
