Portugal sought a sea route to Asia in the 1400s because

Essentially, Portugal hoped to make a financial gain out of it.

At the time, Asian goods were very coveted, but also very expensive due to the many tolls taken on the land route. If they would find a direct route, they could import the goods cheaper and make profit out of this.
