Gandhi insisted on a non-violent resistance, such as boycotts. The Indian name for this method was satyagraha. One example: when the British wanted to pressure the Indian population by limiting their access to salt, Gandhi led a movement to obtain salt from sea water - this was a protest to the British policy but a non-violent one.
