What raises and lowers each compartment on the Panama Canal?

    The Panama Canal uses a system of locks to raise and lower compartments. In essence, a boat enters one lock and water is drained or increased in a corresponding lock to move the boat through. This is done through a system of sluices that allow water to move and drain.
