    Ancient Sparta

    (Boy)

    Dearest Journal.

I wake up a sun rise and start to do morning exercises. I run laps and do push ups. I come in the school building at noon. Here i learn about reading and writing. I have lunch mid day. After that i come back and learn singing and dancing. My friends and I fight but not to rough we have 'play fights'

I am taken to the sanctuary of Artemis Orthia to be flogged to show our strength, toughness and endurance. My friends in our group are all hoplites.

I then go home and eat, and then i rest.

(all male children from age 7-30 + were all hoplites or worriors in Sparta army. All were put in training.)

    Woman

    Dear diary

I am trained at dawn as well as the others. We train until mid morning and then we eat. We are trained so our children can be strong. We are tought gymnastics, choral song and dance.

(Woman were seen as weaker then men so they would do cleaning and they would take care of the sanctuary where they could marry men when they came of age.)
