A major difference between the people who were enslaved in cities and those on plantations in the 1800s was that the previous ones were subjected to much more diverse work in comparison to the latter ones. The latter ones namely only had to do plantation work and nothing else, while the previous had many different obligations.

City slaves were better treated. They took part in economic activities and were taught a trade or skill. Slaves on the plantation were worked till they dropped. Many were subjected to cruel treatments and were considered property who were at the mercy of their masters.
