The Democratic Party has been described by academics, politicians and even the American general public as liberal and progressive center-left party. However, the reality is that it is a party with a great and multifaceted ideological divergence that houses different ideological sectors within its ranks ranging from the center-right conservative, through the center, classical liberalism, socioliberalism, social democracy, progressive and left. These sectors can be dominant according to the historical moment, for example, conservative Democrats, almost all Southerners, were allied with Republicans in the so-called "Conservative Coalition" an informal coalition that dominated the Senate from 1937 to 1961. Also, centrist groups, liberals and progressives have led the party and its policies at different times.
