    Spontaneous recovery happens when, after a resting period in which the stimulus is no longer presented, the conditioned response that was thought to be extinct reappears. For example, if you train your dog to sit at the sound of a bell and give him a treat when he does, once you stop giving him the treat he will eventually stop sitting when you ring the bell; after a while you ring the bell once more and the dog sits.

    Although spontaneous recovery means the conditioned response is not extinct it also results in its weakening, meaning that the response will eventually disappear.
