The Chinese were discriminated against because during the 19th century, millions came into America each year. The came searching for jobs while Americans themselves could not get them. Americans would go on strikes to protest against their bosses, but the bosses would hire the Chinese as strike breakers to stop them or take their jobs for a lower wage. It made many labor unions ineffective and worsened working conditions.
