    The 1876 Presidential Election Pitted republican Rutherford B. Hayes against Democrat Samuel J. Tilden. In South Carolina & Louisiana, Especially Democrats Campaigned in armed uniformed Groups, broke up Republican meetings by force and threatened Republican candidates and voters.
