    I believe the answer is: what is funny to people in one society may not be funny to those from another society

    Communication and language tend to play a huge role in determining the things that would be considered as funny by society. For Example societies that rely on explicit verbal communication tend to prefers comedy delivered through words, while societies that rely on implicit verbal communication tend to favour physical slap sticks comedy.
