According to Erikson, the two most common paths adolescents take when they fail to resolve their identity crisis successfully, and end up in identity confusion, are:

1. The adolescents stop associating or interacting with their family members and peer group; and,

2. The adolescents associate or interact a lot with their peer group, but are not able to do so with a crowd of people whom they are not familiar with.
