The Ring of Fire is defined as a major area in the basin of the Pacific Ocean where a large number of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions occur.

The frequency of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions are due to the presence of a string of volcanoes, seismic activities or earthquake sites, mountain trenches, ocean trenches, and hydrothermal vents.

Known volcanoes that are part of the Ring of fires include the following:

    1) Mount Ruapehu in New Zealand

    2) Krakatau or Krakatoa - an island volcano in Indonesia

    3) Mount Fuji in Japan

    4) Mount St. Helens in the U. S. state of Washington

    5) Popocatépetl in Mexico
