Said Pasha was the King of Egypt who wanted to make his country more like Europe and improve its economy.

The French Engineer Ferdinand de Lesseps presented the Pasha with a plan for the Suez Canal, which he said would make Egypt Wealthy.

In the eventual agreement that was made, Said Pasha made the following concessions:

    1. A concession would be set up lasting for 99 years after the Canal opens

    2. A company would be set up with the Government of Egypt receiving 44% of the Stock. Remaining 56% of the stock would be sold to European investors

    3. The government of Egypt will receive 15% of all profits generated by the Canal

    4. 80% of all labor used during the construction of the canal should be from local villages and cities.

    5. The company would provide money, food, and shelter to everyone working on the Canal
