Is a child born in the us to a mexican mother automatically an american citizen

I'm not sure but I believe so if it's the same way here in Australia as my little sister was born in Australia but we originally come from the Philippines and she automatically became an Australian citizen. However, you must be a permanent resident first (PR) or else the mother will be deported back to her own country and give birth to its child.
