The Renaissance wasn't a deliberate, thought out program; it was something that just 'happened' when a number of different situations all occurred around the same time, and in the same place. However, one of the things that gave impetus to a lot of Renaissance writing, painting, and architecture was the philosophy of humanism. This placed man at the center of all things and reached back to classical (Greek and Roman) times for its inspiration. The goals of Humanism? To revive classical learning through the discovery of ancient manuscripts; to return the arts to a celebration of humanity and move it slightly away from religious concerns of the Middle Ages; to rediscover the lost building methods, styles, and materials or Roman times and reintroduce them to the contemporary world; to attain the same Republican principles that characterized early Rome and made it so dominants and apply them to the civic and cultural life of the emerging republics of the city-states in northern Italy at the time
