because groups have mixed together but have maintained their diversity by retaining cultural differences.

In 2017 alone, almost 15% of American population were immigrants that came from various country.

When these immigrants came, a cultural difussion between the new and old cultures happened and form a diverse population just like what we see in a salad bowl.
