    Cotton exportation.

    In the 1850s, cotton played a fundamental role in the economy of most of the Southern States. Cotton, and all of its handy textile uses were what made it the main source of support of South Carolina's economy. At the beginning of the century almost all cotton in the state was exported mainly to New England.
