Ted worked rotating shifts for many years, has trouble sleeping at night, and lately falls asleep anywhere, any time. Recently he fell asleep while talking with his adult daughter. She forced him to see his PCP. What might be happening, and what tests might the PCP order?

    Ted might be suspected with narcolepsy and the tests that might be ordered are sleep study and sleep questionnaire.

    Narcolepsy:

    It is a chronic sleep disorder where the person is over powered by drowsiness during daytime and suffers sudden sleep attacks.

    Those who suffers from this disorder finds it hard to stay awake for longer duration irrespective of the circumstances they are in. This disturbs their daily routine life.

    The test that need to be ordered are sleep questionnaire and sleep study.
