I have read many stories both fictional and historical accounts about slavery. Apart from that, I have also watched films and documentaries about slavery and the conflicts that were fought to end them. Remembering all these materials, I view slavery as the darkest and most evil system that man has ever devised. To subjugate a group of people and turn them into property that others would exploit for their gain or pleasure is barbaric and cruel. Many historical accounts depict ordinary people are suddenly abducted and put in chains to sold like a machine or product. Many of them were separated from their families and were made to work from sunrise to sunset. Punishment was severe. In the Southern states of America, it has been well documented that slaves who offended their masters were whipped till the skin on their bodies broke and they bled. Others who tried to run away were could be hanged. If slaves had families, the master can break them up and sell to other slave owners. Imagine the emotional psychological trauma that would cause these people. That’s why wars that waged to end this system were just wars because it treated people like property who were at the mercy of those who bought them. Let us hope this system never rises again.
