The Transcontinental Railroad was completed on May 10, 1869 in Promontory Summit, Utah.
It took six years to build (mostly by hand). The Central Pacfic started in Sacramento, Ca and built west while the Union Pacific started in Omaha, NE and headed east.

The Transcontinental Railroad was finished on May 10th, 1869, when a "Golden Spike" was placed. The spike is also known as the Last Spike.
