Why do third parties usually not last very long in the American two party system?

    Third party candidates don't have the funding or popularity of our main two political parties, so they are unable to campaign effectively. Often, voters end up choosing the Republican or Democrat who is closest to the third party candidate if they really wanted to support them, and the third party's supporters give up.
