Trust vs. mistrust

Erik Erikson was a psychologist who developed a theory of psychosocial development. According to this theory, people go through a series of different stages, in form of crisis, along their whole lifespan.

One of these stages is known as trust vs. mistrust and it happens since birth and until the baby is 18 months old. During this stage, the baby absolutely depends on his/her caregiver for the satisfaction of his/her necessities.

If the caregiver responds adequately to the infant needs, then the baby develops a sense of assurance toward the caregiver and towards the world in general, feeling secure even when there is a threat outside. If the care is not adequate, the infant develops a sense of mistrust towards the caregiver and the world in general feeling insecure and anxious about it.
