What is the term for an understanding of one's own use of language?

    This is metalinguistic awareness. This concept is the ability to understand how language can be used as much of a process as it is a concept. It is the process that allows people to understand that language can have more than one meaning, based on the situation, the listener, and the tone or form that the utterances take.
