A role is the behaviour that an individual has and which occupies a given position or status in society. This pattern of behaviour allows us to place a person in society and in relationship to other individuals. Role expectation, on the other hand, refers to the way society thinks a particular role ought to be performed. Role expectation can affect both the way a person behaves as well as the way others interpret this behaviour.
