I believe the answer is: Compensation

According to adler's and horney's theories, people would make Compensation in certain area of their life as a defense mechanism to hide their sense of inferiority in some aspect of their life.

Example: a man who felt that he is physically unattractive so he felt the need to compensate by relentlessly pursuing successful career.
