The Pali Canon, also known as "Tripitaka", is a collection of scriptures in the Buddhist tradition. This canon is divided into 3 categories:

Vinaya Pitaka: Teaches dealing with the rules (discipline). Sutta Pitaka: The sermons of Buddha. Abhidhamma Pitaka: It is the treatises that form the Buddhist doctrine. Also known as "systematic philosophy".

The authorship of these scriptures is attributed to Buddha himself and some of his closest followers.

This is why there can be a high degree of confidence that the Tripitaka is a reliable source, as it represents a source from "first hand" in the teaching of "The Middle Way" or Siddhartha.
