    Explanation:

    There are majorly two bases of power, these are formal and personal. Formal base of power are conferred on an individual in an organization based on his/her position in the organization and the roles and duties bestowed upon him or her, examples are legitimate and reward power.

    On the other hand, personal power are based on the individuals personal trait such as skills and expertise, his charisma. While individuals who exercise formal power may not necessary possess the charisma for leadership, individuals who possess personal power naturally have the charisma and attributes for leadership. Examples of personal power are expert power and referent power.

    From studies, personal power bases such as referent and expert power are more effective in leadership. A leader with a strong interpersonal skill will easily get the devotion and commitment of his/her subordinates compared to those who employ cohesive power and likewise a leader who has a lot of knowledge and skill (expert power) in the job will gain the admiration of his/her subordinate. Most of the subordinates will naturally take him/her as a mentor and are more devoted to doing his/her bidding in the organization.
