The soil and climate in new england made large-scale farming impossible.

    Explanation:

New Englads soil and climate were harsh on the settlers, with really cold snowy winters to unfertile soil, the new settlers could only find little portions of fertile land where they could farm, and they could do it during the winter since all crops would die, so the main reason that plantations didn't develop in New England was the soil and climate.
