On August 2, 1990, troops from Iraq invaded Kuwait. The invasion followed by the annexation of the neighboring country triggered the first US-led war against Iraq. The first units of the Iraqi Armed Forces crossed the Kuwait border at 1 am. After several days, more than 10,000 Iraqi soldiers were already concentrated at the border, but until then they had hoped that everything would not be threatened by President Saddam Hussein.

Then-US President George Bush promised to react with determination to counter the aggression against Kuwait and announced retaliatory measures against the invader. The UN Security Council did not recognize Iraq's annexation of Kuwait. But the political discussion lasted months. Saddam Hussein was urged to withdraw his troops, but was far from yielding.
