Why was the introduction of corn and potatoes to europe and asia so significant

    Corn and potatoes are crops that provide relatively many calories, are easy to cultivate and can be planted in many climates, including ones with winter. They contributed to people being able to produce more food. How important was that can be seen through the fact that when a blight hit the potatoes in Ireland, a famine took place.
