    Colonialism describes the process when one country acquires full or partial political control over another are. The colonial power then occupies the foreign land either mostly in terms of economic relationships or by sending settlers as happened with the colonization of North America by the British. The French were less inclined to send large amounts of settlers when they first colonized North America. Nor did the Spanish in Latin America. The idea in South America in the early colonial years was just settlement by the Conquistadores who would institute an encomienda system. The Spanish men who led the expeditions of the Conquest were the only settlers of regard initially and it was not a settler colony at the beginning like in British North America.
