The English wanted to expand its territorial domains, in order to strengthen their position in regards to other European Powers like Portugal, Spain and France, which already had large colonies in the New World.

However, the English model of colonization in Norhteastern America was different. Instead of founding extractive colonies, and exploit the labor of native americans, the English chartered several private companies to found colonies, where people moved with their families, in order to settle permanently.

The colonists came to America looking for religious freedom, better economic opportunities, and more social mobility.

One of these colonies was the Plymouth Colony, founded in 1620 by Puritan Separatists, who were fleeing religious persecution. The Puritans were essentially calvinists, and opposed the English Anglican Church, they had previosly immigrated to Holland, from where they fled to America.
